Schoolplaten

 English version below

Collectievorming

Classroom pictures

Classroom pictures were frequently used for teaching in Dutch schools from the second half of the nineteenth century to the 1950s. Generations of people associate these pictures with their school days. Centre Céramique maintains a collection of over 600 classroom pictures. The collection can be searched digitally.

Formation of the collection
The collection of classroom pictures and wall maps was put together by the Brothers of Maastricht (known as the Broeders van de Beyaert or, the official name, Fratres Immaculata Conceptae: Brothers of the Immaculate Conception F.I.C.) and later added to the Maastricht municipal library’s collection.

Visual learning
Classroom pictures have their origin in ‘visual learning’. In addition to practising observational skills, this approach mainly endeavoured to increase knowledge of a very wide range of subjects.

Foreign classroom pictures
Use of foreign classroom pictures is particular to the situation in the Netherlands. As a relatively small country, releasing a series of classroom pictures was a major undertaking for a publisher. Pictures from other countries were used for many school subjects, such as nature studies, geography and biblical history.

The end of the classroom picture
Classroom pictures continued to be used until the emergence of audiovisual teaching resources in the 1950s. You will no longer encounter them in schools nowadays and they certainly do not hang in classrooms anymore. They have been relegated to attics and cellars, are used to level floor boards or simply tossed out.
