Archeologie Limburg

 English version below

Limburg Archaeology

The Limburg Archaeology collection consists of archaeological finds that have been discovered and collected since the middle of the 19th century. The City of Maastricht took over this collection from the Province of Limburg in 2004. The oldest objects are roughly 250,000 years old, the youngest date back to about a century and a half ago.

Formation of the collection
The collection focussed on the city of Maastricht from the very beginning, although prehistoric and Roman artefacts from other parts of the province are also well represented. A large part of the collection is the property of the Limburg Historical and Antiquarian Association (Limburgs Geschied- en Oudheidkundig Genootschap, LGOG). The association loaned its share of the collection to the City of Maastricht.

Importance of the collection
No other province in the Netherlands has been populated as long as Limburg, placing this archaeological collection among the country’s most prominent collections. Archaeological finds are presented in a varied series of current exhibitions at Centre Céramique. They illustrate the history of Limburg through the centuries to all those who take an interest in the region’s past. Limburg takes pride in its past, and the City of Maastricht is proud of this collection! Many of the showpieces from the collection are exhibited in museums and history centres in Limburg and beyond (see the links below).

Archaeology in and below Centre Céramique
Part of the Limburg archaeological collection is displayed in the varied offering of temporary exhibitions at Centre Céramique. This collection was previously stored and exhibited at the former Bonnefanten Museum in Maastricht. In addition to the Limburg Archaeology collection (the former Bonnefanten collection), Centre Céramique also maintains a second archaeological collection: the Maastricht Archaeology collection. This collection contains all the artefacts excavated during archaeological research in the City of Maastricht from 1979 onwards. The lower level of Centre Céramique contains both the municipal collection of artefacts excavated in Maastricht (Gemeentelijk Depot voor Bodemvondsten Maastricht, GDBM) and the provincial collection of artefacts excavated in Limburg (Provinciaal Depot voor Bodemvondsten Limburg, PDB).
